New York Tax Facts

NY Income Tax:

Individual income is taxed at seven graduated tax rates. For single filers:

  • 4% for the first $8,000 of taxable income
  • 4.5% for income between $8,001 and $11,000
  • 5.25% for income between $11,001 and $13,000
  • 5.9% for income between $13,001 and $20,000
  • 6.45% for income between $20,001 and $75,000
  • 6.65% for income between $75,001 and $200,000
  • 6.85% for income between $200,001 and $1,000,000
  • 8.82% for income over $1,000,000

For married couples filing jointly, double the income brackets (the tax rates stay the same).

New York City levies additional local income taxes. The rates range from 2.907% to 3.648% depending on filing status and income.

NY Sales Tax:

The state of New York has a 4% sales tax and many localities levy additional sales taxes. Many goods (such as certain food items, medicines, and newspapers) are exempt from sales taxes, as are some services.
